Pakistan agrees to reopen Friendship Gate on Thursday

KANDAHAR (Pajhwok): Pakistani officials on Wednesday promised to reopen the Friendship Gate at the Spin Boldak-Chaman border crossing on Thursday moing (Sept 1), an Afghan border police official in the southe province of Kandahar said. Afghan Border Police 3rd brigade official Col. Mohammad Ali Dawari told Pajhwok Afghan News that Afghan and Pakistani border officials in held their latest flag meeting on Wednesday and during the talks they agreed to reopen the border crossing. He said the Pakistan side agreed to the border’s reopening after many efforts and meetings between the two sides. Afghan officials had previously said they did not agree to some Pakistani conditions for reopening the border. One of the conditions was to open the Friendship Gate during a special ceremony daily. The only transit route in southe region was closed by Pakistani authorities on August 18 after the alleged buing of the Pakistani flag by some protestors from Kandahar. Pakistani delegation in Azra to negotiate crew release

PUL-I-ALAM (Pajhwok): A Pakistani delegation has arrived in central Logar province to negotiate the release of a helicopter crewmembers held hostage by Taliban militants after their helicopter crash landed in the Azra district, an official said on Wednesday. The helicopter belonging to the Punjab govement made an emergency landing on August 4 due to technical failures in Azra district. A member of the provincial council and resident of Azra, Abdul Wali Wakeel, told Pajhwok Afghan News negotiations between an Afghan delegation and the Taliban over releasing the abducted Pakistani officials had stopped. The Taliban councils in Peshawar and Quetta were putting pressure on the insurgents in Azra to hand over the hostages to the Pakistan govement, he said. He said the govement of Pakistan sent a delegation on Tuesday to Azra district to hold face-to-face talks with the insurgents. GARDEZ (Pajhwok): Over a hundred young men have launched an awareness campaign about disadvantages of using the Pakistani rupee in southeaste Paktika province, an official said on Saturday. The campaigners held placards inscribed with a variety of slogans, like “stop the use of the rupee; afghani is our national currency; buy and purchase goods with the local currency.” Sultan Ahmadzai, the youth foundation organiser, alleged the Pakistani currency was being used in easte and southeaste provinces. He is heading the drive to draw the attention of govement and people to the issue. “The rupee is still used in most transaction across the country and the govement should take a strong initiative to halt the practice,” he stressed. Shafiqullah Sahar, another participant of the campaign, agreed the afghani should be given preference over other currencies. Security officials hailed the effort as a positive development. Police chief Brig. Gen.
