Nearly 40 militants eliminated in security operations: MoD

KABUL(Pajhwok): Nearly 40 terrorists have been killed in five different provinces over the past 24 hours, the Ministry of Defence in Kabul claimed on Sunday.

The army, police and intelligence persoel killed 39 insurgents in Nangarhar, Ghazni, Kandahar, Takhar and Helmand provinces, the ministry said in a statement.

It added the fatalities included 31 militants of the Islamic State (IS) group.The security forces, backed by airpower, destroyed two Daesh hideouts and seized light and heavy ammunition.

At least two army persoel were killed in the operations, the MoD said, adding Afghan forces stepped up their fight against militants recently ahead of the summer fighting season.
