Pir Gilani offers to mediate between Ghani, Abdullah

KABUL (Pajhwok): The High Peace Council chief on Sunday offered to mediate between President Ashraf Ghani and his Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah amid a deepening rift between the two leaders.

Differences between the president and the CEO resurfaced four days ago when the latter criticised the former for not meeting him over the past three months and not consulting him about some appointments.

In response, the presidential palace issued a statement, calling Abdullah’s remarks as irresponsible and against the principles of governance.

The two leaders were expected to meet yesterday, but the meeting did not take place for unknown reasons.

Afghanistan National Front party leader and HPC head Pir Syed Ahmad Gilani was quoted in a statement issued to Pajhwok Afghan News by the HPC office that “Afghanistan is facing undesirable situation and passing through a sensitive phase.”

Gilani said the Afghans understood the country’s wounds needed treatment, but the latest tension between President Ashraf Ghani and CEO Abdullah and their minor differences reached the media.

“I as an elder, the servant of jihad and the country and as the HPC head demand of the two leaders to shun their minor disputes for the sake of God, in the supreme interest of the country and for protection of the long oppressed nation.”

He said he stood ready to mediate between the two leaders and revive the atmosphere of trust between them.
