Court grants Afghan interpreter asylum in Britain

KABUL (Pajhwok): A former Afghan interpreter with coalition troops has been allowed to stay in the United Kingdom, a British newspaper reported on Saturday.

Last year, when a ban on forced retus was lifted by the court, immigration authorities tried to send the 31-year-oldback to Afghanistan, the Daily Mail said.

But as a result of its campaign, the newspaper said, the interpreter was informed by court he could stay in Britain.Nearly 180,000 people have supported the campaign called Betrayal of the Brave.

A last-minute court hearing brought the asylum seeker some relief. “I am so happy about this decision. The work I did for the allied forces was very dangerous...,” he was quoted as saying.

The Taliban would target him if the UK had sent him back to Afghanistan, the then interpreter said, hoping his case would help others who were in the same dilemma.

He came to the UK to claim asylumin 2014 when coalition forces started to pull out of Afghanistan. He was detained and his claim refused.
