Herat girl commits suicide; woman strangulated

HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): A young girl committed suicide while a woman was killed in separate incidents in weste Herat province, officials said Monday.

Zonal hospital spokesmanMohammad Rafiq Sherzaitold Pajhwok Afghan News an 18 years old girl hanged herself due to family problems in the Gulistan area of Heart City.

Following the oveight incident, he said, the body of the girl was brought to the hospital for a forensic examination. The hospital spokesman gave no further details.

The body of a 20 years old woman was also transferred to hospitalfrom Pashtun Pul area, Sherzai said, adding the victim’s identity was yet to be established.

Serious injuriesto the neck of the woman showed she had been strangulated, the spokesman said. An investigation into the incident is underway.

Experts link violence against women to poverty, unwholesome traditions, forced marriage and enmities between families.
