Floods maroon dozens of civilians in Sangin, Garmser districts

LASHKARGHA (Pajhwok): Triggered by incessant rains, floods inflicted heavy losses on residents of some districts of southe Helmand province, officials said on Tuesday.

Ayub Umar Umari, administrative chief for Garmser district, told Pajhwok Afghan News 50 homes were damaged by the oveight flooding in Sarband locality.

Four children had been marooned in the Darweshano locality and 30 passengers in Laki area, the official said. At least 50 more stranded families in Sarband could not move to safety.

He waed the largest canal in Garmser could be partially destroyed by the floods if immediate preventive measures were not initiated. The water level in Helmand and Arghandab Rivers is fast rising.

Mullah Mohammad Qasim, former chief of Nad Ali district, said the floodshad displaced hundreds of families and washed away crops on hundreds of acres of landin Sangin.

However, the flooding did not cause causalities in the district. If urgent assistance was not provided, some people might lose their lives, he feared.On Monday floods killed three people in southe Zabul province.
