Taliban likely to overrun Kunduz’s Imam Sahib District: PC

KUNDUZ CITY (Pajhwok): The Provincial Council (PC) head of northern Kunduz province on Friday warned of Taliban’s possible attempt to overrun the Imam Sahib district.

Mohammad Yousuf Ayubi told Pajhwok Afghan News heavy clashes were underway between security forces and the Taliban on the outskirts of the district and if proper attention was not paid to the situation there was chances the insurgents may overrun the district.

He said the Taliban stormed attacks from different sides and captured some areas, but security forces retake them.

Security officials, however, rejected the concern of PC and said clearing operation had been launched and the district would never fall to the militants.

Mohammad Khalil, another PC member, acknowledged clashes between militants and security forces. “If security forces in the district did not get support from air and ground the district will fall to the Taliban,” he believed.

Deputy Police Chief Masum Hashami confirmed clashes in the district, but said Imam Sahib would never fall to Taliban. He said enough troops were in the district and clearing operation was also launched in which heavy losses were inflicted on the militants.
